My Rights!.

Dates.
Service Type.
Funded by.

The “My Rights!” project, implemented under the Active Citizens Fund in Greece as part of the EEA Grants 2014-2021, successfully contributed to the development of the civil society sector’s sustainability and capacity while reinforcing its role in promoting and safeguarding democratic procedures, active citizenship, and human rights. In collaboration with Equal Rights Beyond Borders, Velos Youth led the project, adapting to the challenges posed by the pandemic and achieving commendable results.

During the project’s implementation, a series of 12 workshops were delivered to 54 young participants, who were able to join online despite the constraints of the pandemic. Additionally, the project adopted a holistic case management approach and directly supported 113 individual young people, providing them with essential legal representation. This support encompassed assisting asylum seekers in making asylum claims, requesting family reunification, and appealing negative decisions or age assessment determinations.

As part of its commitment to continuous improvement, the project invested in the professional development of its team members. Ten team members received training in human rights-related issues, enhancing their capacity to support young people both during and beyond the project’s lifespan.

While the “My Rights!” project may not have been without its challenges, it successfully made a valuable impact in empowering vulnerable individuals with legal guidance, ensuring their access to justice and protection of their rights. By prioritizing active citizenship and promoting the importance of human rights, the project has contributed to fostering positive change within the civil society sector in Greece.

Adam’s Journey Towards Self-Sufficiency with Velos Youth

Background

Adam initially sought assistance from Velos Youth in 2020, expressing his need for psychological support and job counselling to achieve self-sufficiency. He actively engaged with the organisation’s services, attending workshops and actively participating in various programmes. After finding a seasonal job on a Greek island, he left Athens but eventually faced homelessness upon his return. Recognising his vulnerable situation, Velos Youth’s interdisciplinary team decided to enrol him in the Housing Integration Project, aiming to provide him with stable housing. Concurrently, the Livelihoods officer supported Adam in his search for employment.

Challenges and Legal Support

While working at a supermarket, Adam received the disheartening news of his asylum application being rejected. Velos Youth’s social worker promptly referred him to the lawyer of the MyRights! project, ensuring that he continued to receive comprehensive support from the interdisciplinary team during this challenging period. The lawyer, armed with additional reports from Velos Youth professionals, filed an appeal to the asylum service’s appeal committee, seeking to overturn the initial negative decision. Adam endured a stressful and uncertain waiting period for the court’s decision, but he remained resilient, continuing his work and studies.

Successful Outcome

Adam’s perseverance paid off when the appeal committee ultimately overturned the initial negative decision and granted him asylum in Greece. Empowered by this positive development, he secured a full-time job in the tourist sector, providing him with the necessary financial stability to independently search for housing. With the ongoing support of the Velos Youth team, Adam successfully found a suitable house and moved out of the apartment he had been staying in for the past six months. Throughout this transitional period, the team guided him in understanding his new responsibilities and prepared him for the next phase of his journey.

Reaching Autonomy

Expressing his deep gratitude for the support he received, Adam conveyed his determination to become more autonomous during a farewell meeting with the Velos team. His story serves as a testament to the significance of initiatives like MyRights! that provide asylum seekers with vital legal support in a foreign country. By offering advice, assistance, and representation, such programmes assist beneficiaries in navigating the complex asylum law system. Without this crucial legal support, refugees may encounter significant challenges and barriers in accessing their rights.

Conclusion

Adam’s transformative journey with Velos Youth highlights the organisation’s commitment to holistic support, encompassing psychological well-being, job counselling, housing integration, and legal assistance. By leveraging a multidisciplinary approach, Velos Youth empowers individuals like Adam to overcome adversity, achieve self-sufficiency, and rebuild their lives.

Social service

The Social Service provided by Velos Youth can help you address a wide range of needs and challenges related to your social integration, emotional well-being, education, and overall development.

Specifically, we provide individual one-to-one casework for young refugees and asylum seekers. This involves conducting initial registrations, accommodation applications, and making internal and external referrals to the support and services you may need. We can also assist with legal asylum procedures, health related matters, and address basic needs by providing clothing and other essential items. Additionally, we can conduct a best interest assessment (BIA) for a family reunification application should you wish to join a family member in another European country.

We can also support you with bureaucratic issues which may include navigating administrative procedures, completing necessary forms and applications, and providing guidance and information to help you effectively address bureaucratic challenges.

By providing the above elements into the social service provision, Velos Youth can ensure a comprehensive approach to helping you to settle in Athens, or further afield!

Hot food

We are very happy to work together with the Saffron Kitchen Project and to offer 35 portions of hot, fresh meals every day at our day center. This partnership allows young people in our center to have a tasty and healthy meal when they visit us. There is a variety of recipes and the use of ingredients reflecting diverse backgrounds contribute in the most meaningful way to the overall sense of care that we try to provide. The menu is printed and displayed in our space so that everyone can see what meals are available during the week and our lunchtime is from 13:30 to 14:30.

Single donations are put to use in accordance with the season, the young person’s needs and the stage of their journey they are at. It is important for a young person to feel safe by having decent clothing, a reliable means of communication, and access to a range of services.

We make sure that is the case, thanks to your help.
